About BOTEPCO
The Botswana Teaching Professionals Council (BOTEPCO) is the statutory body established under the Botswana Teaching Professionals Act No. 22 of 2019 to regulate, professionalise and uphold standards within the teaching profession in Botswana. The Council registers and licenses teaching professionals, sets and maintains professional standards, upholds a Code of Ethics, and supports the continuing professional development of teachers across the country. BOTEPCO’s value proposition centres around professionalising teaching in contributing to the ultimate improved quality of education in the Country.
The Council reports to the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education and is accountable to a Board of Directors.
The Mandate of the Council is to
- Regulate the teaching profession.
- Maintain professional and ethical standards for teachers, which include teaching knowledge, skills and competence.
- License teachers.
- Advise on teacher training issues.
- Advocate for the teaching profession.
- Maintain a register of teachers.
- Establish, publish, review and maintain a Code of Ethics for teachers.
- Monitor adherence to the Code of Ethics under paragraph (g).
- Review and advise on professional standards for teachers.
- Determine the grounds for refusal or withdrawal of registration where necessary.
- Determine the criteria and procedures for registration.
- Consider and decide on any application for registration.
- Promote continuing education, training and professional development of teachers.
- Establish panels to investigate and hear complaints against teachers.
- Ensure a fair hearing is held in accordance with the procedure determined by the Board.
- Conduct research to inform quality teaching.

Regulatory Instruments

CODE OF ETHICS
BOTEPCO has established the Code of Ethics for the Teaching Profession to guide teachers in maintaining professional, ethical and responsible conduct in their interactions with learners, parents, communities and other stakeholders.
PARLIAMENT ACT
BOTEPCO is a statutory body established under the Botswana Teaching Professionals Council Act, No. 22 of 2019. The Council operates under the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education.
PROFESSONAL TEACHING STANDARDS
The Professional Teaching Standards provide a framework that defines the knowledge, skills, values and professional practices expected of teachers, supporting continuous professional development and quality teaching and learning.
